Hospitality to strangers, self respect and devotion to work are some of the characteristics of people of muzaffarpur. Simple in their living, one can find upper as well as lower caster people in the district. The upper group belong to various castes, prominent among which are: kayasthas, bhumihars, rajputs and the backward castes - yadavs, koeris, musahars, chamars, and others. Regarding physical appearance of the people, the upper caste people have smooth features with comparatively and generally a fairer complexion. The lower caste are negroid in feature and are relatively shorter in stature.
